Hey Susan! Just wanted to let you know I have read your book about
3 times since my surgery and every time it keeps me inspired. I am about
8 months post op RNY and I am down 120lbs. I feel absolutely great. I
am at a stand still right now and have been for about 3 weeks. I exercise
a lot more and I know I am losing inches cause my clothes are falling
off of me, but the weight is the same. Plus all those other issues you
dealt with, you know with the spouse. He acts like I am a totally different
person and that he doesn’t know who I am anymore. It is so hard.
Now I wanted to ask you- what are the most carbs anyone food item should
have. I love my carbs, but I am trying to stay away and eat more protein
and do the best I can. I know you eat a lot of fish. I don’t like
fish so it is hard. Meats in general don’t thrill me. I eat a lot
of cheese. I seem to get real tired after I eat and my doc says I have
to take more vitamins and increase my proteins. I am going to try the
protein smoothies this weekend. Well, thanks for listening and thanks
for the inspiration.
Christy
Thanks for your compliments on my book... I really enjoyed that time period in my life. There is such excitement in getting our lives back! Plus I did a lot of cool things; it was a very good year.
You WILL have many standstills now that you are at 8 months post op... that is how it works. Between the body putting on the breaks, our getting bolder in our eating habits sliding in those inappropriate foods, the ability to eat larger portions, replacing fat with muscle via exercise, and our lack of nutrition catching up with us... there are lots of things contributing to the scale sticking. However, you have noticed that there are still great changes going on and the clothes continue to get baggier. Focus on the long term goals and don’t worry about day to day weight... otherwise you will drive yourself nuts.
I can’t give you a single portion carb number to use as a line in the sand... as it depends. I eliminated all starches from my regular diet... potatoes, bread, sugar, flour, pasta... and after a while, I was so stoked about how great I was doing I didn’t care about carbs anymore. If someone put a gun to my head I wouldn’t eat a baked potato, even now! I view the carb foods as the enemy and don't enjoy them. The truth for me is that 'nothing tastes as good as thin feels'. The best thing to do is eat the protein food first and learn to live without the carb foods. Otherwise when you are able to eat more in a couple of years, you won't have changed the habits that made you fat in the first place and you'll have a tough time maintaining your hard fought weight loss. So stop loving the carb foods so much or it will be your undoing in the future. You have to change the bad behavior.
I do eat a lot of fish... how can you not like fish? All fish? Seafood has so many different textures and flavors. It is common for people to have had poorly prepared or old fish and brand all fish with a big YUK. Try a mild non-fishy fish such as tilapia and then tell me you don’t like fish. Broil a piece of tilapia on high for ten minutes and slap on a little salsa after putting it on your plate. If you really don’t like it... okay... you don’t like fish... but you owe it to yourself to give it a go.
I also eat a lot of chicken... and simmer it in different crock-pot types of dishes. Deli sliced turkey, ham and chicken are a great food for us... each slice is about an ounce. I roll it up with cheese and lettuce with a little mayo to moisten it.
You are tired after you eat carbs because carbs burn quickly and elevate your blood sugar levels, your body releases insulin to lower it, your blood sugar dips drastically and you suffer from that high-low rush that makes you tired, sleepy, and thick. This is why you need to find alternative proteins to give your body a slow burning source of fuel.
Bottom line is that your doctor is right...and you do need to increase your protein and vitamins... which is why I would recommend our new IDS protein for your case. It contains over 50% of many vitamins and minerals in just one scoop in addition to 23 or so grams of protein. Just two small drinks a day would boost your protein levels by 50+ grams and give you some needed vitamins in addition to the Vistas you should be taking.
The IDS also tastes FANTASTIC... everyone that tries it loves it! This is why we put it on sale this month.
Trust me that after 4 weeks of Vista capsules, and two IDS shakes a day... you won’t believe the difference in how you feel bella!
As for the husband… just keep reassuring him that you are the same person on the inside and he will eventually straighten up. Suddenly they are waking up with a pretty bold and confident woman rather than their comfortable, fat ole, low self-esteem wife and it freaks them out given that they no longer look like Clooney or Pitt. So instead of getting all turned on, the dummies get all wiggy and jealous. Then they eventually realize that we love them for their brains and money rather than their looks and it all settles down. Baaahahahahaha!
You are doing a great job... you just need some fine tuning!
ciao,
Susan Maria
